Show & Tell

My show and tell for today is a place that we love to just go and soak in the sounds and scenery! It is the Bridgeton Covered Bridge. Indiana is known for having so many covered bridges, 91 standing bridges to be exact. I do not ever remember seeing an old covered bridge until we moved to Indiana… they are one of my favorite places to visit. History just seems to beam from the old wood planks as you walk (or drive) across them. We always take a walk across even if they are still open to traffic.

The Bridgeton Covered Bridge is about 15 minutes from our house so we stop by there frequently… When it isn’t busy there I could sit for hours and listen to the water as it flows over the dam and across the rocks! It is a beautiful site to behold, but more than the site, I love to sit and listen!! It is so tranquil and relaxing when there aren’t alot of people out there. We went while snow was on the ground for the first time last winter, but I didn’t have my camera! Let me just say that it was breathtaking and I will definately venture out this year to get some “snow” pictures. An adventure it will be too because it is way out in the country on crazy winding roads!! You must be careful because the roads aren’t always cleared out there!!

The red building on the right is the old Mill.

This was the first time that I have ever seen anyone in the water here… I was kind of shocked as it does seem like it would be quite dangerous… but there were so many people here on this extremely hot day.

Every year Indiana hosts Covered Bridge Festival which lasts a week… Vendors, shoppers, & tourists come from all over the United States (and abroad) during this time of the year! The festival spans over several counties in Indiana where covered bridges are located, but the impact is greatest within the  West Central Indiana area.

In April 2005 an arsonist burned down the old Covered Bridge! A new identical replica was built to replace it thanks to the many locals who pitched in, in more ways than one, to see that it was rebuilt. The new bridge (which you see in the photos above) was dedicated on Oct. 1, 2006.
